Getting More from Your Catalog Searches
A few simple habits can make the difference between a frustrating search and finding exactly the book you had in mind. Because the collection in Pljevlja includes material in Montenegrin, Serbian and other languages, and because older titles may be catalogued in either Cyrillic or Latin script, it often pays to try more than one spelling of an author's name or a title. If a search for a local writer returns nothing, switch scripts or enter just the surname.
Search tips
- Start broad, then narrow. A single keyword usually brings back more useful results than a long phrase. Refine afterwards by author, year or format.
- Use subject searches for research. If you are exploring a theme such as regional history, the Sandžak area or the natural heritage of northern Montenegro, a subject search will gather related works that a title search might miss.
- Check the item's location and status. Some items, particularly reference works, rare editions and local history material, may be for reading on the premises only rather than for loan.
- Note the call number. Writing it down before you visit saves time at the shelves and helps staff locate the item quickly.
Borrowing and requests
To place requests and borrow items you will generally need an active library card. Details on joining, renewing and what membership includes are on the membership page. Loan periods and limits can vary by type of material, so check the conditions shown with each item or ask at the desk.
When the catalog doesn't have it
No single library holds everything. If a title is missing, staff may be able to suggest similar works already on the shelves or advise on other options for obtaining it. Reading groups, author evenings and children's activities also often draw on the collection, and you can see what is planned on the programs page. For anything else, the team can be reached through the contact page.
