Reading Outdoors: Making the Most of a Park Visit

A park bench is one of the oldest reading rooms there is, and many of our members like to pair a library visit with an hour outdoors. If you are planning to read in the park, a little preparation makes the experience far more comfortable. Choose a shaded spot in the warmer months, when the afternoon sun can make pages glare and paper books warm to the touch. Pljevlja sits in a highland valley, so mornings and evenings can be noticeably cooler than the middle of the day even in summer. A light layer is worth bringing.

Looking after borrowed books outside

Library books travel well, but they appreciate some care. A few simple habits help keep them in good condition for the next reader:

• Carry books in a bag rather than loose, especially if rain is possible.
• Avoid placing them directly on damp grass or near drinks and food.
• Keep them out of strong direct sunlight for long periods, which can fade covers and curl pages.
• Use a bookmark rather than folding page corners or leaving a book open face down.

If a book does get wet or damaged, please let staff know when you return it rather than trying to dry it with heat. That is usually the best way to save it.
