Search Tips and Making the Most of Your Reservations
Once you are comfortable with the basic steps, a few simple techniques can make your searches faster and more accurate. Library catalogs work best when you give them clear, focused terms, so it helps to think about how a record is likely to be written rather than how you would describe the book in conversation.
Getting better search results
- Start broad, then narrow down. Enter one or two key words first, then use the filters for format, language or publication date to trim the list.
- Try different spellings and scripts. Many titles in Montenegrin, Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian may be catalogued in Latin or Cyrillic script, and author names can appear with or without diacritics (for example, č, ć, š, ž). If a search returns nothing, repeat it in the other script or without accents.
- Search by author surname. Entering only the surname is often more reliable than a full name, especially for writers whose names are transliterated in different ways.
- Use the subject or category field. If you are researching a topic, such as local history of Pljevlja or the wider region, subject searches can surface books you would not find by title alone.
- Check the format. The same work may exist as a printed book, a reference-only copy or a periodical issue. Make sure the record you choose matches what you want to borrow.
Understanding item status
Each record usually shows whether a copy is on the shelf, on loan or for use in the reading room only. Reference works, rare items and older local materials are often kept for in-library consultation, so they cannot be reserved for home borrowing. If a title is on loan, note the details and ask staff whether a hold can be placed.
After you reserve
A reservation sets the item aside for you, but it will normally be held only for a limited time. Collect it as soon as you can, and bring your membership card. If you do not yet have an account, see the membership information for how to join. You can also browse the full catalog page for an overview of the collection.
If a record looks incomplete, you cannot find something you know the library holds, or you need help with older or regional materials, our staff are glad to help. Get in touch through the contact page or ask at the desk during your next visit.
