Making the Most of Your Study Session
The guidelines above keep the rooms fair and calm for everyone. A little planning before you arrive will also help you get more out of a two-hour booking, especially in the busy weeks before exams, when demand for quiet space is highest.
Before you arrive
- Book early in exam season. Popular time slots tend to fill quickly. If you know your exam timetable, reserve your sessions as soon as you can rather than on the day.
- Plan what you will cover. Two hours passes quickly. Decide in advance which chapters, problem sets or essay sections you want to finish, so you can start straight away.
- Check the catalogue first. If you need reference books or set texts, search the library catalogue beforehand. You can then collect the items on your way in instead of using your booked time to look for them.
- Bring what you need. Chargers, notebooks, headphones for any audio material and a water bottle with a secure lid save trips in and out of the room.
During your session
Many students find it helps to work in focused blocks of 25 to 50 minutes with short breaks in between. If you need to stretch, take a call or talk something through with a friend, step outside the study area so others can keep concentrating. Set your phone to silent rather than vibrate, because vibration on a desk carries further than people expect in a quiet room.
If you are studying in a group, keep discussion low and to the point. Groups that need to talk at length may be better served by asking staff whether another area of the library suits collaborative work.
When you finish
Try to wrap up a few minutes before your slot ends. That gives you time to pack up, return any library materials to staff or the returns point, and leave the room ready for the next person. If you no longer need a booking, let the library know as early as possible so someone else can use the time.
Library membership gives you access to borrowing as well as study facilities. See the membership page for details. For questions about bookings, please get in touch through the contact page.
