Planning a Visit and Reading the Landscape

The Breznica river runs close to Pljevlja, and the canyon it has carved is part of the wider limestone country of northern Montenegro. In this terrain, water shapes everything: steep rock walls, shaded gorges and small springs that change with the seasons. A walk here is easier to appreciate if you know a little about how karst landscapes form. Rainwater slowly dissolves limestone over thousands of years and leaves cliffs, caves and sudden drops in the valley floor.
