Diana Krall announces new dates for tour in the United States

Exploring Diana Krall's Music Beyond the Tour

The 2024 North American dates mentioned above have now passed, but Diana Krall's recordings remain an easy way into jazz for listeners of any age. The Canadian pianist and singer, born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, built her reputation in the 1990s by blending the swing of the Great American Songbook with a relaxed, intimate vocal style. Her piano playing draws on the trio tradition of Nat King Cole, Oscar Peterson and Ahmad Jamal, and much of her best-known work keeps that spare, conversational sound.

Where to start listening

Newcomers often begin with When I Look in Your Eyes and The Look of Love, two albums that show her taste for lush ballads and orchestral arrangements. Love Scenes is a quieter trio record that highlights her phrasing and the interplay with bass and guitar. Turn Up the Quiet, the album behind the tour legs described on this page, returned to standards in small-group settings. For something different, The Girl in the Other Room includes songs she co-wrote with Elvis Costello, her husband, and covers of songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits.

Listening and reading at the library

Public libraries are a good place to explore jazz without spending much. Depending on what is available locally, you may find CDs, songbooks with piano arrangements of standards, and biographies or histories of jazz. Try searching the library catalog for the composers she often interprets, such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin, or for general guides to jazz piano and vocal styles.

If you enjoy discussing music with others, keep an eye on the library's programs for listening sessions, talks or reading groups. For current concert dates, always check the artist's official website or the venue directly, since tour schedules change and older announcements quickly go out of date.
